The Directors of the New North Gallery are pleased to announce the launch of the inaugural New North Photography Prize 2009. The prize will be an exciting new addition to Melbourne’s arts calendar, and an important Northside cultural event.
The total winning pool of $8,750 includes prizes in a variety of categories, including the Grand Prize, Student Prize, Portraiture Prize, and the People’s Choice Award.
Awards include cash prizes, printing and framing services, and an opportunity for winning artists to exhibit at the host venue, the New North Gallery, Fairfield, in 2010.
Prize entry forms are available from the gallery’s website, www.newnorth.com.au, and will close on Friday, 16th October 2009.
The Prize will be judged by Mr Julian Burnside, Q.C.; Ms Jane Scott, Director of the TarraWarra Museum of Art; and Mr Eugene Barilo von Reisberg, of BvR Arts Management. The Winners will be announced at the Award Night on Thursday, 12th November 2009.
Works by the prize entrants will be exhibited at the gallery from 3 to 29 November 2009. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced at the end of the prize exhibition after the popular votes have been tabulated.
The New North Gallery is a dedicated photography space. It was opened in 2006 by photographers David Johns and Michael Silver, and has hosted numerous exhibitions of Australian and International photography.
“The New North Photography Prize is our way of giving back to the community, supporting existing artists, encouraging emerging photographers, and fostering the young talent,” says David Johns.
Michael Silver, himself an exhibiting photographer, is aware of the financial concerns facing many photographers when staging an exhibition, which may incur onerous printing and framing costs. “I hope that the New North Photography Prize will enable and encourage photographers to pursue and further their artistic career”, says Silver.
